The patients’ average brain temperature was 38.5☌, but it varied even more widely, from 32.6 to 42.3☌. This was to explore the clinical implications of data obtained from healthy volunteers. The researchers analysed temperature data collected continuously from the brain in 114 patients who had suffered from moderate to severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). There is good reason to believe this daily variation is associated with long-term brain health, something we hope to investigate next. We found that brain temperature drops at night before you go to sleep and rises during the day. Such high temperatures have been measured in people with brain injuries in the past, but had been assumed to result from the injury. To me, the most surprising finding from our study is that the healthy human brain can reach temperatures that would be diagnosed as fever anywhere else in the body. Surprising findingsĭr John O’Neill, Group Leader at the MRC Laboratory for Molecular Biology, said: Further work is needed to investigate whether there is linked with the development of age-related brain disorders. The researchers propose that the brain’s capacity to cool down may deteriorate with age. The results also showed that brain temperature increased with age over the 20-year range of the participants, most notably in deep brain regions, where the average increase was 0.6☌. Their brain temperature was around 0.4☌ warmer than that of females scanned in their pre-ovulation phase. This sex difference was most likely driven by the menstrual cycle, since most females were scanned in the post-ovulation phase of their cycle. On average, female brains were around 0.4☌ warmer than male brains. While the brain surface was generally cooler, deeper brain structures were frequently warmer than 40☌ with the highest observed brain temperature being 40.9☌.Īcross all individuals, brain temperature showed consistent time-of-day variation by nearly 1☌, with highest brain temperatures observed in the afternoon, and the lowest at night.īrain temperature in the morning versus the evening in post-ovulation (luteal) females and males (credit: N Rzechorzek, MRC Laboratory for Molecular Biology, Brain) Female brains warmer than male brains The study also found that brain temperature varied depending on: In healthy participants, the average brain temperature was 38.5☌, more than two degrees warmer than that measured under the tongue. This was important for both ‘night owls’ and ‘morning larks’. Knowing the biological time-of-day that each brain temperature measurement was taken at allowed differences between each volunteer’s body clock to be factored into the analysis. The volunteers were scanned in the morning, afternoon and late evening over one day, at the Edinburgh Imaging Facility, Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.Ĭrucially, they also gave the participants a wrist-worn activity monitor, allowing genetic and lifestyle differences in the timing of each person’s body clock, or circadian rhythm, to be taken into account. To study the healthy brain, the researchers recruited 40 volunteers, aged 20 to 40 years. These findings could be used to improve understanding, prognosis, and treatment of brain injury. The research, published in Brain, also included analysis of data from patients with traumatic brain injury, showing that the presence of daily brain temperature cycles strongly correlates with survival. Importantly, these findings also challenge a widely held belief that human brain and body temperature are the same. This map overturns several previous assumptions and shows the remarkable extent to which brain temperature varies by: The new study, led by researchers at the MRC Laboratory for Molecular Biology, has produced the first 4D map of healthy human brain temperature. Until now, however, MRS had not been used to explore how brain temperature varies throughout the day, or to consider how an individual’s ‘body clock’ influences this. More recently, a brain scanning technique, called magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), has enabled researchers to measure brain temperature non-invasively in healthy people. Previously, human brain temperature studies have relied upon data capture from brain-injured patients in intensive care, where direct brain monitoring is often needed. In healthy men and women, where oral temperature is typically less than 37☌, average brain temperature is 38.5☌, with deeper brain regions often exceeding 40☌, particularly in women during the daytime. New research has shown that normal human brain temperature varies much more than we thought, and this could be a sign of healthy brain function. Study links a daily cycle in brain temperature with survival after traumatic brain injury.

Outdoor string lights are called bistro lights, and while indoor string lights aren’t usually called bistro lights, it’s really the same thing. String lights are used both inside and outside. Can bistro lights go both inside and outside? Especially with LED bulbs, the bistro lights will last a long time so you can keep experimenting with where you want them to go. You can even move them around the yard over time. Once you buy them, you’re sure to find a place where they look good. They’ll look good hanging directly on the wall of your house, your fence, around the patio, wrapped on poles in a garden, or hanging above your head in the open yard. Outdoor string lights are incredibly versatile. You get classy ambient lighting for much cheaper than other types of lighting designs you could install. You can buy outdoor string lights and ropes at any hardware store, and most of the time you can go home and hang them up yourself. Whereas many Christmas lights and similar products require special installation, you can easily hang backyard lighting from a rope or strong string. Depending on your expertise, you may need help with that part, especially if the wall lights will be going up high or require extensive latter use.īecause they are so easy to install, outdoor string lights are also much cheaper than other methods of yard and patio lighting. You may need to put in a pole to hang them from, depending on the size of the area you are hanging the string lights up in. Unless you have some incredibly complicated idea, most outdoor string lights can be hung on the existing walls of your patio, fence, or wherever you are hanging them. Instead of paying a contractor to remodel your wall or dig up your garden to lay out all the wires and light fixtures, outdoor string lights are almost always DIY. They are very easy to use and put up, as opposed to other outdoor lighting fixtures that require expensive installations and remodeling. Outdoor string lights are so popular for several reasons. Bistro lights are usually used to refer to bigger string lights that are specifically used for outside spaces. Usually, string lights are a warm white color, but can be found in any color. String lights are essentially long strands of lights connected by a wire that can be hung or wrapped around something to light it. Are bistro lights the same thing as string lights?īistro lights are basically backyard string lights. You’ll find yourself replacing them way less often, saving you money on LED bulbs. They save energy, meaning they’ll require much less maintenance. LED bulbs will last longer and handle outdoor temperatures better, so it’s a good idea to get LEDs for your bistro lights. If hot pink lights are what you are looking for, then that’s what will enhance your space. The point of bistro lighting is to add to the ambiance of your outdoor space. Style your bistro lights to match your aesthetic. Many people are using bistro lights to light up their patios, pool areas, and yards in general.īistro lights are rounder bulbs spaced evenly apart that give off warm white light, but there’s no rule about you changing it up if you want. The truth is, you can hang bistro lights in your own backyard. Most people think of public areas when they think of bistro lights, like a restaurant’s outdoor seating section, or a popular wedding reception venue. They are typically bigger bulbs spaced out evenly and hung along a wall, ceiling, or strung from poles across the area to light it. They are often used for restaurants, wedding receptions, and patios. Bistro lights are a type of outdoor light that is used to light up and enhance an outdoor space. Enoch’s guide also mentions Raphael, saying in Enoch 40:9 that Raphael “presides over every suffering and every affliction” of people on Earth. In The Book of Enoch, God gives Raphael a healing assignment: “Restore the earth, which the angels have corrupted and announce life to it, that I may revive it” (Enoch 10:10). They praised God with hymns they thanked him for having performed such wonders had not an angel of God appeared to them?” When they stood up again, he was no longer visible. Write down all that has happened.’ And he rose in the air. I am about to return to him who sent me from above. Now bless the Lord on earth and give thanks to God. You thought you saw me eating, but that was appearance and no more. As far as I was concerned, when I was with you, my presence was not by any decision of mine, but by the will of God he is the one whom you must bless as long as you live, he the one that you must praise. But the angel said, 'Do not be afraid peace be with you. Raphael says in Tobit 12:13-14, “… I was sent to test your faith, and at the same time, God sent me to heal you and your daughter-in-law, Sarah.”Īfter Raphael reveals in verse 15 that he is one of God’s archangels, verses 16 to 21 describe the rest of the story: “They were both overwhelmed with awe they fell on their faces in terror. Proclaim before all people the deeds of God as they deserve, and never tire of giving him thanks.’” Then Raphael finally reveals his identity to Tobit and Tobias. Tobit 12:6 says: “Then Raphael took them both aside and said, ‘Bless God, utter his praise before all the living for the favor he has shown you. When Tobias and Tobit try to express their gratitude by paying their guide, they discover that he is actually the archangel Raphael – and Raphael declines personal thanks, directing them to thank God instead. Raphael also helps get rid of a demon named Azazel who had been tormenting Sarah. Along the way, Raphael directs Tobias to use an ointment made from a fish to heal his father Tobit's blindness. When they hire a guide in a foreign country, they don’t realize that the guide they hired is actually the archangel Raphael in disguise, sent by God to help them. The family whom God sends Raphael to help has lived faithfully. The Book of Tobit describes how Raphael heals both physically (healing a father named Tobit of blindness and keeping his son Tobias safe while traveling), and spiritually (delivering Tobias’ fiancée Sarah from a demon). Raphael and the angels who works with him are all healing angels, according to Christian tradition. The Protestant Bible mentions two other angels who are traditionally considered part of God’s 7 archangels (Michael and Gabriel). In Tobit 12:15, Raphael declares: “I am Raphael, one of the seven angels who stand in the glorious presence of the Lord, ready to serve him.” These seven angels are known as archangels in Christian tradition because they’re angelic leaders who each direct many other angels and focus on specific types of assignments from God. The Book of Enoch, an ancient Jewish religious text that Christians in the Eritrean and Ethiopian Orthodox churches consider a part of their sacred canon of scripture, also mentions Raphael. However, the Bible used by Catholic and Orthodox Christians does include information about Raphael, in the Book of Tobit. The Bible used by most Protestant denominations doesn’t mention the archangel Raphael. Who is the archangel Raphael, and what can we learn from the healing assignments that God sometimes gives angels to work on? Is the Archangel Raphael Found in the Bible? This popular angel is associated with all kinds of healing for body, mind, and spirit. When you need healing, you may think of the archangel Raphael. Another good one somebody else wrote was “Man joins gym to shed personality”. For example I did a story last Christmas Eve where the headline was “Kid leaves out sherry and mince pies for Jeff Bezos”. One technique I have is where the headline reads like a totally normal headline until the last word, at which point it subverts your expectations. Sometimes I’m looking for one specific detail in a story that I can pull out and use as a jumping off point, other times I’m thinking about how the story could affect the man on the street and find some humour that way. On slow news days I tend to cast the net further wide and tackle broader stuff depending on the time of year.Īs for the actual process of writing the articles, I tend to have a series of approaches in my head on standby that I can run the stories through. The headline is the whole take in its most condensed, funny form, so if your idea doesn’t work as a headline, it’s never going to fly. If there’s a big breaking story then I’ll try to approach it from different angles and come up with various headline ideas. Really though it depends on the day and the news. I watch about three screens displaying the news at once and neck so much coffee I’ll probably still be awake long after I’m dead. What is your process like for writing a satirical news article? “One technique I have is where the headline reads like a totally normal headline until the last word.” I’ve been lucky enough to write for it for a couple of years now. Going freelance was nerve-wracking enough even without a pandemic to contend with, but it was also really enjoyable to be my own boss. Looking back on it I don’t think I would have made the leap even a few months later. I made the leap in September 2019, so not long before Covid struck. I’m a full-time freelance writer for various clients, mainly magazines and websites. I massively over-prepared and they only needed a fraction of what she said. It was a tiny column where I talked to one of my former creative writing lecturers about her recently-released book. Then I moved on to write website copy for an online accounting company, which was around the time I got a small interview in SFX magazine. This led to a job where I wrote about carrier bags for a packaging wholesaler. These articles would be about all sorts of odd things like airport car parking and the advantages of different kinds of casters. If you know what SEO means you’ll know what I’m on about. I think the first time I was given actual money for stringing words together was for a company which produces blog posts that make websites appear higher up in Google. What was your first paid writing job and how did you land it? I just wasn’t doing the graft of actually hammering the ideas out via writing. It wasn’t until I was in my mid twenties though that I started submitting stuff to Newsjack, but in all that time I was always thinking about topics in that sort of stand-up way, trying to find a funny angle on them. He joked about and riffed on things in a way that felt so relatable, and the comedy felt so far ahead of other routines I’d seen up until that point. I’d just watched Phill Jupitus’ Quadrophobia stand-up on VHS and it was a revelation. In terms of comedy I think it was when I was about 14. I drew lots of comics as a kid which I think uses the same part of the brain that lends itself to writing and storytelling, so I guess that was the start of me writing without really realising it. This one is PACKED with practical advice for anyone with an interest in satire or topical writing and a story that will resonate with all writers. The anterior segment is made up of the cornea, iris and lens. The eye is not shaped like a perfect sphere rather it is a fused two-piece unit, composed of an anterior (front) segment and the posterior (back) segment. The front part is also called the anterior segment of the eye. A thin layer called the conjunctiva sits on top of this. The front visible part of the eye is made up of the whitish sclera, a coloured iris, and the pupil. There are six extraocular muscles that control eye movements. The eyes sit in bony cavities called the orbits, in the skull. Humans have two eyes, situated on the left and the right of the face. Structure A detailed depiction of eye using a 3D medical illustration MRI scan of the human eye Three types of cells in the retina convert light energy into electrical energy used by the nervous system: rods respond to low intensity light and contribute to perception of low-resolution, black-and-white images cones respond to high intensity light and contribute to perception of high-resolution, coloured images and the recently discovered photosensitive ganglion cells respond to a full range of light intensities and contribute to adjusting the amount of light reaching the retina, to regulating and suppressing the hormone melatonin, and to entraining circadian rhythm. The remaining components of the eye keep it in its required shape, nourish and maintain it, and protect it. The retina makes a connection to the brain via the optic nerve. In order, along the optic axis, the optical components consist of a first lens (the cornea-the clear part of the eye) that accounts for most of the optical power of the eye and accomplishes most of the focusing of light from the outside world then an aperture (the pupil) in a diaphragm (the iris-the coloured part of the eye) that controls the amount of light entering the interior of the eye then another lens (the crystalline lens) that accomplishes the remaining focusing of light into images and finally a light-sensitive part of the eye (the retina), where the images fall and are processed. It is approximately spherical in shape, with its outer layers, such as the outermost, white part of the eye (the sclera) and one of its inner layers (the pigmented choroid) keeping the eye essentially light tight except on the eye's optic axis. The eye can be considered as a living optical device. Not that Pastner himself played a central role, mind you.
